Content Quality vs. Backlink Quality: Which Matters Most?
Which is more important, content or backlinks? Find out which matters most and where to focus to get more and better-converting traffic.
Guest Posting at Scale: Get Tons of High Quality Backlinks
Guest posting is one of the best ways to get high-quality backlinks. This tutorial shows you how to do it efficiently as a link building technique.
This link building strategy isn’t difficult to execute and follows a simple 3-step process.
1. You need to find websites to pitch your guest post ideas to.
2. Find topics to write about.
3. Write content and get it approved/published on their blog, ideally with a link back to your site.
But is guest posting worth the effort? Well, we regularly use this link building strategy at Ahrefs and see it as one of the staples to build quality links to your website.
And even if you think that link building is useless, guest blogging comes with additional benefits.
You can be a guest blogger on larger sites to gain exposure and build authority in your niche. This is good to both generate referral traffic to your blog and build your personal brand.
Some of the largest publications like Forbes and the Huffington Post use guest bloggers to fuel their websites. And it’s a win-win for everyone.
As the writer, you’ll likely get a backlink to a page on your website, and as someone who is accepting the post, you’ll get free content.
To find websites to pitch, you can go to Google and search for a query like:
“guest post by” “your topic.”
This will show you a very relevant list of guest blogging sites you can pitch. And the best part?
You can pitch them confidently knowing that they have accepted guest posts in the past, even if the site doesn’t have a “write for us” page.
But as a guest blogger, you don’t want to contact any old site.
There are certain SEO metrics you should look for. Ahrefs’ Domain Rating is a good one to watch out for. This metric represents the overall strength of a website’s backlink profile.
So if a website has a high DR score, it may be a good “eyeball” indication that the site is worth pitching.
Another way you can find sites to be a guest author at is to use Ahrefs’ Content Explorer. Just type in a query related to your niche, and you’ll likely find more websites than you can handle.
The best part about Content Explorer for finding contributor sites is that you have access to some awesome filters. A few of these filters include:
1. One article per domain ► this narrows down the results to only one page per website since you don’t need to pitch the same website multiple times.
2. Domain rating ► if you’re new to guest blogging, then you may want to get practice on less popular websites. You can set a Domain Rating (DR) filter to something like 30-40, which will give you a list of sites that are more likely to accept your content.
Alternatively, if you’re a seasoned expert, you may want to filter for higher DR websites (ie. 50-75).
The next step is to find topics to blog about.
In the video tutorial, you’ll learn a few unique techniques.
The first is the “Robin Hood technique,” which is built around the premise of taking from the rich and giving to the poor.
You can simply look at what other popular websites are writing about, use those ideas as inspiration, and write your own unique take on it for lesser known websites.
The second hack is the Splintering technique.
This method uses the principle of taking large guides that you have already written and “splintering” them off into smaller segments.
For example, if you have a blog post about “Paleo Dieting,” you can easily split this off into a dozen topics quickly.
The final step is to actually write the content. This one comes with a big caveat.
If you want to do it at scale, you’ll likely need a team of freelance writers or an internal team which requires money.
But you don’t need a team of writers in order to execute a successful guest blogging campaign.
As you continue to grind through writing these articles, you’ll get better and faster.
Finally, the tutorial ends with some additional guest blogging tips to get the most mileage out of your guest blogs. These are ones that you’ll definitely want to watch so you can incorporate them into your next guest posting campaign.

Google uses hundreds of ranking signals and tweaks their algorithm around 500-600 times per year. And many of these ranking factors can’t even be looked at independently.
It’s not to say that they’re unimportant, but an average person doing SEO for their site doesn’t need to worry about 200+ ranking factors.
So, here are the most important ranking factors.
The first important ranking factor are quality backlinks.
Backlinks form the basis of PageRank, which is the foundation of Google’s ranking algorithm. But not all links are created equal. There are a lot of factors that contribute to a backlinks ability to push a page higher in the SERPs.
What factors are those? Watch the video to find out.
The next ranking signal is freshness.
Freshness is a query dependent ranking factor, meaning it’s more important for some queries than others.
What do you do for queries that require freshness? You’ll learn more about it in the video.
The next ranking factor is search intent.
While backlinks are arguably the most important ranking factor, search intent is likely the most overlooked.
You’ll learn more about what search intent is and how to figure it out in the video.
The next ranking factor is topical authority of the website.
Google wants to rank pages from authoritative sources and this goes way beyond backlinks.
How do we know this? You’ll learn more about it in the video.
The next ranking factor is content depth.
Depth is about hitting the talking points of a topic that searchers want and expect to see. You’ll learn more about how to make sure your content has depth in this tutorial.
The next ranking factor is PageSpeed.
PageSpeed has been a known ranking factor since 2010. And while a lot of people obsess over improving their site speed by fractions of a second, from an SEO perspective, it doesn’t really matter much for most sites.
In fact, Google said: “the speed update will only affect pages that deliver the slowest experience to users and will only affect a small percentage of queries.”
Bottomline: improve your pagespeed so it’s not super slow. You don’t want people to bounce because your page wouldn’t load.
The next ranking factor is to ensure your site uses the HTTPS protocol.
In 2014, Google announced HTTPS as a very lightweight signal affecting fewer than 1% of global queries.
The final ranking factor is user experience signals.
Google wants to rank content that offers visitors a positive experience. Because if people are finding good results from their search engine, then they’ll keep using it.
So the absolute basics would be to try and keep visitors on your site for as long as possible without any kind of trickery.
How do you do this? You’ll learn some tips in the video.
Ranking in Google is rarely about the latest tips, algorithm updates, or buzzwords. It’s about putting in the work to create content that searchers are looking for, providing a great user experience, and proving to Google that it’s the best result for a query.

What are the Different Kinds of High Quality Backlinks?
When it comes to SEO, there are two types of backlinks: paid and organic. Paid backlinks are those that are purchased using money, and organic backlinks are those that occur naturally on the internet. Both types of backlinks can be used to increase your site’s ranking in search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo!

01:44 What are Social Media Links?
02:08 What are Blog Comments?
Paid links are acquired through a number of different methods including purchasing ad space on other websites or paying for a link within an article. The cost of paid links varies depending on how many you purchase and where you purchase them from. In general, paid links tend to be easier to obtain because they’re sold by third party providers who have no vested interest in your website’s success. However, they can also be more expensive than organic ones if they’re not purchased through an affiliate network such as JVZoo or ClickBank.
Organic links, on the other hand, occur naturally when another website mentions yours within its content or posts a link back at yours as part of their own content. This happens all the time when users post comments on blogs or forums about topics related to yours. Organic links usually come from reputable websites that aren’t trying to sell anything or promote themselves by linking out to you.
There are also many different kinds of high quality backlinks that you can get for your website. Some of the most common types of backlinks include the following.
Social Media Links. These links come from social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. They are usually easy to get because they don’t require any special skills or effort to create. However, they aren’t as powerful as other types of links because they can be easily removed by the site where they appear if someone complains about them.
Blog Comments. Blog comments are one of the best types of links for getting traffic to your site because they show up at the bottom of an article and can be seen by many people who visit that blog post. You can also earn money from these links by writing content for other blogs in exchange for a link back to your website. This type of link is considered natural because it’s not edited by humans at all times like some other types of links might be, such as comment spam.

One common mistake that many link builders make is to reach out to everyone who’s linking to a top-ranking page for a keyword they want to rank for.
Without analyzing your link prospects, you could be building bad links or links that won’t actually help you rank.
So what you need to do is identify your competitor’s high-quality backlinks so you can know which pages will be worth getting a link from.
To do that, you’ll have to ask yourself a series of questions.
Watch the video to find out what these questions are, and the methods you can use to answer them.
Should you only go for links that match all of the criteria discussed in the video? Probably not, because you’ll be limiting your pool of prospects too much.
Instead, use these as guidelines to determine the amount of time and effort you’re willing to put into gaining links from certain pages and sites. And also use them to find which sites you’ll want to avoid building links on.
